AMERICANA: Book donation from Carnegie Endowment for International Peace
A quote from Iván Pasteiner’s foreword (May, 1928): “... This donation consists of 766 works and 1195 volumes and encompasses all those fundamental works of the United States book production which concern the USA’s political, constitutional, social and economic relations, as well as its literature, history and geography, theoretical works of American authors concerning these subjects and the uniform edition of works of high literature of the most excellent American authors.
The donation’s importance - in addition to its material value, which is app. 23-25,000 Pengős - lies in the possibility it provides to study the United States and the American mentality independently. In this respect, until now our limited financial resources and the high prices of American books made us rely primarily on indirect resources.
Considering the unity of content of the donation and also to show its appreciation for the donation, the Library created a separate “Americana” special collection from the valuable gift of Carnegie Endowment. The present donation forms the backbone and basis of the collection and with time, it shall merge all books of the Library related to the United States
As such, this present provides the basis also in Hungary for the development of an American Library, which will form a worthy part of the similar collections created by Carnegie Endowment in Hamburg and Vienna.
We are honestly grateful to Carnegie Endowment for this noble act, whereby it obliged both the Hungarian academic world and the public interest and must also remember the Hungarian Embassy in Washington and the ministry of religious and public educational affairs, which played an indispensable part in directing Carnegie Endowment’s attention to Hungary and the University Library.”
