In our news series on the university’s cultural heritage, our readers are invited to gain an insight into the history of the Eötvös Loránd University’s Botanical Garden this week.
From the 18th century onwards, illustration tools were an integral part of university education, and their users and enrichers organized them into collections over time. Across Europe, the first university collections included botanical gardens and plant collections.
The first botanical garden in Hungary was founded in 1771, two years after the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine. The herb garden was also relocated when the university moved to Buda and then to Pest. It was moved to today’s Museum Boulevard in 1809, however, the flood in 1838 severely damaged the area. Palatine József bought a plot of land at Üllői road for the university in 1847, so the university botanical garden was also moved here. More details about the history of the herb garden can be found here.
We are pleased to offer you the opportunity to support the realization of the 250th anniversary exhibition of ELTE Herb Garden.
